Spanish Makerel Invade Tampa Bay
With the warmer weather and the excellent bait situation in the bay the waters are teaming with Spanish Makerel. They seem to be around every bait pod and just about anywhere you go within the bay there will be Macks looking to feed. This coming weekend if your looking to catch fish then Macks are it. Of course there are other fish around and the Redfishing is still excellent as well up on the flats.

ReplyDeleteHey this is an awesome blog. We are heading down to St.Pete beach area and fish off and around the 35th ave draw bridge by Isla Del Sol. Do the macks come into the intercoastal at all? What do you suggest for tackle in that area? I appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteYes they do come into the intercoastal and in that area if your fishing off the bridge which I'm not sure if you can or not....then I would attempt to use a live bait that matches the white baits of smaller threadfins. If you are using a lure use one of the spanish mack lures that are popular in the area. No. 00 Clark spoons and any of the Got-Cha plugs will work from about 1-3ft deep cast out and retrieve it in a light jerking motion. On the fall is when you will get your hits. If your beach fishing try wading out and casting as FAR out as possible then with a constant retrieve. If your in a boat you can troll the area as well or off the beaches. The intercoastal may be a little more of a challenge and since the macks MOVE around alot, if your stationary you may have a harder time but watch for bait and you should be ok.
ReplyDeleteThanks alot Trevor I'll make sure I give it a try. I'll let ya know how it goes.
