Trout on the flats

I think I've said this enough over the past two weeks but it is worth saying again. If you think you want to fish and catch some good sized Trout or just want to make sure you catch something the Trout are biting everywhere across the grass flats off Howard Park and Anclote Key. There are also spanish mackerel in with them and a Pin fish on a free line or under about a 3ft cork could bring in a Shark or two.  I was able to take my sister out Trout fishing accross the Flats and this is just one of the many trout we landed.

I'm new to this site and I've been Kayaking around the Gandy Area. I'm interested in trying the Howard Park area. Is there a place to park along the Causeway and launch the yaks? Also, good job keep everyone updated on the area.

  2. Has anyone seen good size Tarpon being caught at Howard Park and also has anyone seen snook there?

  3. Yes right on the causeway you can launch your Kayak OR you can launch it on the north side in a special launch area. Either works great and the grass flats are beautiful. Tarpon on Sunday of last week were everywhere just to the south of the no Boats area by Howard Park. I watched a guy hook up with about a 120lber while he was fishing for trout. BUT I went back the following Friday and I only saw 3 pods and they seemed to be fewer. ALSO I have seen NO snook near there or on the beaches there HOWEVER the beaches and passes just to the west by ANclote are FULL of Snook just laying in the current.

Another question for Trevor. Is Anclote too far of a Paddle in the Kayak if launching at Howard Park?

  5. Current, Winds and Weather are a factor. However it is about 3 miles from shore to Anclote Key. From Howard Park the launch and paddle wouldn't be that bad or difficult. Remember saftey first, lifevest, sound maker and possibly flares will always be useful and FILE A FLOAT PLAN. Even if it is just an E-mail to Friends that says Where your launching where your planning to go and when you plan to get back. ALL very helpful. Kayaking is by far a more dangerous endeavor when you involve the open ocean, waves and large fish that can pull you around or out of your kayak.
